Being in London for 1 year

I have been thinking about going to London for 1 year for improve my English. The only problem is, that I am not sure on which school to go. To a boarding school? Private schools? Maybe someone can give me some imformation about this schools and what are the advantages and disadvantages of this different kinds of schools. Another problem is, that in british schools you have to pay a lot of taxes for the schools so I am not sure yet if I really wanna do that ...
maybe someone did that before and can give me some advice ...
